At times, the joy that life attacks me with is unbearable and leads to gasping hysterical laughter. I find myself completely out of control and wonder how could life could surprise me again and again and again, so completely. How could a man be a cynic? It is a sin.

A Rubbing

ON DEATH

a small cemetery of bits · pencil on paper · no flowers

I'm not afraid of dying. I'm just afraid of what's gonna happen afterwards, with my body, you know. Probably just regular stuff.
On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.
I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure if you die, the cancer dies at the same time. That's not a loss. That's a draw.
The only thing an old man can tell a young man is that it goes fast, real fast, and if you're not careful, it's too late.
Death is a funny thing. Not funny haha, like a Woody Allen movie, but funny strange, like a Woody Allen marriage.
I like birthdays as much as the next guy. But I firmly believe that too many will kill you dead.
I think if Abraham Lincoln were alive today he would look around, scream, and desperately claw at the inside of his coffin.
My dad died, and my grandfather died, and my great-grandfather died. And the guy before him, I don't know. Probably died.
Hey, anybody wanna know the difference between O.J. Simpson and a turkey? Well, a turkey is delicious.
In conclusion, life is good. But it is too short and the rent is too damn high.
A man goes to the doctor. Doctor says, You are gonna live till you are 90. Man says, I am 90. Doctor says, See? What did I tell you.

No. 01on surprise

Comedy is surprises, so if you're intending to make somebody laugh and they don't laugh, that's funny.

- N.M.
No. 02on structure

I always told everybody the perfect joke would be where the setup and punch line were identical.

No. 03on gimmicks

If you're a comic and you're not funny you need a gimmick. That reminds me, I need a gimmick.

No. 04on bombing

No. 05on craft vs. art

Stand-up comedy, as it is customarily produced, is a craft and not an art. But an art can be part of stand-up. It can be the central part. But it must be carefully hidden beneath perfected craft.

- N.M.
No. 06on the comedy itself

There is a third player. But it takes time to understand it is the only real player. It is the comedy. I am not speaking metaphorically if I assert that the comedy is a live thing, that neither you nor the audience is responsible for.

- N.M.
No. 07the favorite

My favorite all time joke: A guy walks into a bar. That's it. That's the joke.

Eight Shapes

Norm Macdonald’s comedy is shape-based, not joke-based. He had maybe ten reusable structures and ran every premise through them. Here are eight, with the cleanest example of each.

  1. A moth goes into a podiatrist’s office. The podiatrist’s office says, "What seems to be the problem, moth?" The moth says, "Doc, where do I begin? I go to work for Gregory Illinivich, and all day long I’m crunching numbers, but you know, Gregory, he doesn’t respect me, he doesn’t care about me, and at home my children, when I look in their eyes, I see only the failed deceptions of my life. They speak Russian to me, they don’t even know me. I look at my wife and she does not look at me. I’m an alien in my own home." The doctor says, "Look, moth, this all sounds terrible, but why didn’t you go see a psychiatrist? Why come to a podiatrist?" And the moth says, "’Cause the light was on."

    - Conan O’Brien, 2009

The classic shaggy-dog: a six-minute Russian-novel monologue collapses into a five-word physics joke. The audience is exhausted by the buildup; their laughter when the punch lands is partly relief. Norm liked these because they require the audience to commit. Anyone who left in the first minute lost.
