§ I
1918 – 1935
a Brooklyn boy and his father
unfold ↓Melville Feynman was a uniform-salesman who had, by his own account, wanted to be a scientist and was determined his son would be one. He walked Richard through Principia Mathematica as a game - not the equations, the habit - asking always: what's really going on here? How would you know if you were fooling yourself?
The world looks so different after learning science. See that bird? It's a brown-throated thrush, but in Germany it's called a halzenfugel, and in Chinese they call it a chung ling, and even if you know all those names for it, you still know nothing about the bird.
I learned very early the difference between knowing the name of something and knowing something.
Since then I never pay attention to anything by experts. I calculate everything myself.
In the Rockaway accent and unhurried Brooklyn cadence he would keep all his life he repeated the lesson his father had given him: distrust the name of the thing; ask what it does.
My father had taught me to notice things. One day, I was playing with an "express wagon," a little wagon with a railing around it. It had a ball in it - and when I pulled the wagon, I noticed something about the way the ball moved...

1935 – 1942

unfold ↓MIT for undergraduate, Princeton for graduate. At Princeton he worked under John Wheeler. The dissertation - "The Principle of Least Action in Quantum Mechanics" - is where the path integral begins. Wheeler once said of him: "He's another Dirac - only this time human."
The test of all knowledge is experiment. Experiment is the sole judge of scientific 'truth.'
A space-time description in which the probability of a path is given by the sum over all paths, each weighted by an amplitude, is equivalent to the Schrödinger equation in the nonrelativistic limit.
Study hard what interests you the most in the most undisciplined, irreverent and original manner possible.
It was at Princeton, too, that he met Arline Greenbaum. He married her in 1942 on the ferry to Staten Island. She was already ill with tuberculosis; the marriage was partly to care for her.

1943 – 1945

unfold ↓He went to Los Alamos at twenty-five, a junior theorist under Bethe. Oppenheimer had the famously unruly men to run and Feynman was among the unruliest - constantly poking at the mesa's security theatre. He cracked the filing-cabinet locks. Then the Mosler safes that held the atomic-bomb secrets.
A great deal more is known than has been proved.
Arline was in the Presbyterian sanatorium in Albuquerque, two hundred miles south. He would hitchhike down on weekends. On June 16, 1945, while he was with her, she died. He did not cry until weeks later, passing a dress in a shop window he thought she might have liked.

I adore you, sweetheart. I know how much you like to hear that - but I don't only write it because you like it - I write it because it makes me warm all over inside to write it to you.

Three weeks after her death, he was at Trinity. A bright flash from the desert; he watched without goggles - the one man at the site to do so - on the reasoning that the windshield of a truck would stop the ultraviolet. "It was purple," he said afterward. He was twenty-seven.
You cannot develop a personality with physics alone; the rest of life must be worked in.

1946 – 1988

unfold ↓After the war, Cornell for three years, then Caltech for the rest of his life. He turned down Princeton, the Institute for Advanced Study, and a standing invitation from almost everywhere else. Pasadena suited him: the weather, the proximity of open country, a department that let him lecture when he felt like it.
Nobody ever figures out what life is all about, and it doesn't matter. Explore the world. Nearly everything is really interesting if you go into it deeply enough.
From 1961 to 1963 he taught the first- and second-year physics sequence at Caltech. The lectures were recorded and transcribed into three red volumes that remain in print. Sales of the Lectures, royalties on an introductory course, have kept him comfortably alive on library shelves.
If I'd been born a bongo player, I'd have been a damn good one.
He did much of his work in a diner called Gianonni's and later at a strip-club called the Papagayo Room in Pasadena, where the owner kept a booth open for him. He sketched equations on place-mats. The place was raided. He went to testify: yes, he used it as an office. Yes, others did too. The raid failed.

In the 1970s he painted his Dodge Maxivan with Feynman diagrams. The plates read QANTUM.

1948 · Shelter Island · 1965 · Stockholm

unfold ↓At the Shelter Island conference of 1948 - a small, hothouse affair on Long Island - Feynman, Schwinger, and Tomonaga each presented a different way of making quantum electrodynamics finite. The math agreed. Dyson showed the three were the same theory. Feynman's version used pictures.

The theory of quantum electrodynamics describes Nature as absurd from the point of view of common sense. And it agrees fully with experiment. So I hope you can accept Nature as She is - absurd.

So what happened to the old theory that I fell in love with as a youth? Well, I would say it's become an old lady, that has very little attractive left in her... But, we can say the best we can for any old woman, that she has been a very good mother and she has given birth to some very good children.
The diagrams are a bookkeeping device - they enumerate the terms of a perturbation expansion - but they came into physics as a way of thinking about what happens in a scattering event: electrons travelling, photons exchanged, vertices as small dots. They remain how the field is taught.
Nature uses only the longest threads to weave her patterns, so each small piece of her fabric reveals the organization of the entire tapestry.

1959 – 1988

The first principle is that you must not fool yourself - and you are the easiest person to fool.
It's a kind of scientific integrity, a principle of scientific thought that corresponds to a kind of utter honesty - a kind of leaning over backwards. Details that could throw doubt on your interpretation must be given, if you know them.
Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts.

Science knowledge only adds to the excitement, the mystery and the awe of a flower. It only adds. I don't understand how it subtracts.

January – June 1986
the ice-water glass
unfold ↓On the morning of 28 January 1986, the space shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds after launch. All seven aboard died. The Rogers Commission was convened, and President Reagan appointed Feynman to it - against his wife Gweneth's better judgment; he was, by then, visibly ill.
At the televised hearing on 11 February 1986, Feynman dropped a rubber O-ring into a glass of ice water during a break, clamped it for a minute, then pulled it out stiff. "I believe this has some significance for our problem." The ring, cold, had lost its resilience. The booster seals on the morning of launch had been cold.

For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled.
Appendix F is his minority report. He fought to get it included at all. It remains, three decades later, the plainest public document ever written about how large organisations lie to themselves.
The worthwhile problems are the ones you can really solve or help solve, the ones you can really contribute something to. No problem is too small or too trivial if we can really do something about it.

1987 – 1988

unfold ↓He had been sick since the late 1970s: a rare cancer of the abdomen, Waldenström's. Surgeries, remissions. Through all of it, with his friend Ralph Leighton, he was trying to travel to the Tuvan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic - a small Turkic-speaking country in the southern Siberian taiga. Something about the name of its capital, Kyzyl, had caught him.
It was something about the name. Kyzyl. He wanted to go.
I don't have to know an answer. I don't feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in the mysterious universe without having any purpose - which is the way it really is, as far as I can tell. It doesn't frighten me.
The travel papers arrived the week after he died.
He went into UCLA Medical Center on 3 February 1988 with an intestinal hemorrhage. He refused further surgery. On 15 February, sinking, he briefly woke, looked at those around him, and said what he said.
I'd hate to die twice. It's so boring.
