David Lynch as a night of television: ten channels on an old set in a dark room, then the test card. His forty-three sourced lines as the station identification; the weather in L.A., 950 reports of it; the 2:30 milkshake at Bob’s Big Boy, with napkins; twenty minutes of sitting still; eighty-seven fish to catch; a doughnut to keep your eye on; the Red Room, backwards; today’s number from a jar; both his books entire, by teletext; and Tbilisi, 2017.
3:00 a.m.Sign-off.Test card, tone, then snow until morning.
Programmes subject to change, the weather especially.
In Room to Dream, Kristine McKenna calls him “a creature of habit”: the same milkshake at two-thirty for eight years, twenty minutes of meditation twice a day from 1973, the weather from his window. So here he is as a night of television on an old set in a dark room, ten channels and a test card, and the knob on every set turns to the next.
Every station begins by saying who it is, whatever the hour. This one lets him do the talking.

“Ideas are like fish. If you want to catch little fish, you can stay in the shallow water. But if you want to catch the big fish, you’ve got to go deeper. Down deep, the fish are more powerful and more pure. They’re huge and abstract. And they’re very beautiful.”
“What got me interested was the phrase ‘true happiness lies within.’ At first I thought it sounded kind of mean, because it doesn’t tell you where the ‘within’ is, or how to get there. But still it had a ring of truth.”
“I call that depression and anger the Suffocating Rubber Clown Suit of Negativity. It’s suffocating, and that rubber stinks. But once you start meditating and diving within, the clown suit starts to dissolve.”
“I liked to paint and I liked to draw. And I often thought, wrongly, that when you got to be an adult, you stopped painting and drawing and did something more serious.”
“Cinema is its own language. You can say so many things, because you’ve got time and sequences. You’ve got dialogue. You’ve got music. You’ve got sound effects. It’s a magical medium.”
“An idea is a thought. It’s a thought that holds more than you think it does when you receive it. That first fragment is like the Rosetta stone. It’s a hopeful puzzle piece. You fall in love with the first idea, that little tiny piece. And once you’ve got it, the rest will come in time.”
“Anger and depression and sorrow are beautiful things in a story, but they are like poison to the filmmaker or artist. You must have clarity to create. You have to be able to catch ideas.”
“People have asked me why - if meditation is so great and gives you so much bliss - are my films so dark? There are many dark things flowing around in this world, and most films reflect the world in which we live.”
“Stay true to yourself. Let your voice ring out, and don’t let anybody fiddle with it. Never turn down a good idea, but never take a bad idea. And meditate.”
“I look at the world and I see absurdity all around me. People do strange things constantly, to the point that, for the most part, we manage not to see it.”

The Red Room, as far as it goes
It arrived on a car roof. Editing the Twin Peaks pilot, around six-thirty one summer evening, he leaned on a warm car in a film lab’s parking lot, and “the Red Room appeared. And the backward thing appeared, and then some of the dialogue.”Catching the Big Fish, “The Red Room”
The backward thing was older than the room. In 1971 he had Alan Splet record him saying “I want pencils” backward, for a scene in Eraserhead that was never shot.Room to Dream, “Wrapped in Plastic”
The room began as a clause. ABC’s deal required a closed ending, so the pilot could be released as a feature in Europe. That version ends in the Red Room, and it was on video in Britain five months before the pilot aired in America.Room to Dream, “Wrapped in Plastic”
The method: the dream’s lines were recorded phonetically reversed and played backwards, with a slight reverb, so the words come out forwards and nothing else does. Years later he wanted a video shot “backward like the Red Room sequences.”Wikipedia, on the episode of 19 April 1990; Room to Dream, “In the Studio”

Wes W under every draw, until the seven
Man if tomorrow’s not a seven I’m gonna lose it
Waiting for a seven. His jar kept viewers waiting forty days.
About the programme
Every day from August 2020, on his YouTube channel, he drew one of ten ping-pong balls, numbered one to ten, from a jar, and told you today’s number. It ran beside the weather reports until late 2022.
For the first forty days every number came out except seven, reportedly his favourite, and the comments began to wonder whether the jar was rigged. Wes W left the same comment under every draw. On 25 September 2020 the seven came out: “Today’s number, Wes, is seven.” (Dazed, 29 September 2020)
An honest jar goes that long without a seven less than twice in a hundred tries. This jar is honest; the station has looked.
Seven was his lucky number, he says in Room to Dream, and he had been “looking at license plates” since before Eraserhead. On the Wild at Heart shoot, by the producer Monty Montgomery’s account, “We couldn’t go to the set until David had done his numerology with license plates and seen his initials on license plates.” (Room to Dream, “Finding Love in Hell”)
Two of the draws strayed into his weather playlist, on 20 February and 29 October 2022. Channel 1 has them, with the weather.
CCToday’s number is …not drawn yet. For today’s weather, turn to channel 1.
Room to Dream (2018) tells his life twice over, each part first as Kristine McKenna reported it and then as he remembers it. Catching the Big Fish (2006) is the short one, in eighty-seven pieces, and most of this broadcast was caught in it.
